<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In May,1972, Donald M. Grant published his sixth Robert E. Howard book, Echoes From An Iron Harp. It was typeset and printed by Ink Printing Co., Charleston, Rhode Island, and bound by Arnold's Book Binding in Reading, Pennsylvania. 1079 copies were delivered from the bindery and approximately 1,000 copies were sold. The rest of the copies were given to Glenn Lord, Alicia Austin, who illustrated the book, and various reviewers and other involved parties.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The initial copies shipped out to dealers were bound in the cloth pictured above on the left. There was no mention of different bindings in any of Grant's correspondence, but in the decades since the book was published, a few copies have surfaced with a darker red cloth. I recently wrote the late publisher's partners and asked if they knew anything about this variation in binding, and got no response, so I assume they do not have that information. As far as can be determined, there is no specific data about this variant binding, other than copies with the variant binding are extremely rare.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The value of Grant's Howard volumes has not increased as most other Howard volumes have, the value likely affected by the fact that most of Grant's Howard books have questionable texts, but the poetry collections are an exception to that rule. No difference in the value of these two bindings for Echoes From An Iron Harp has been established.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Grant was not known for doing this sort of thing with his stock, and variations in his binding materials have rarely been documented. This probably matters to a few collectors.

This blog is on a free hosting site. I always used the template that came with the blog tools, and never really learned how to have more control over that. I was a lazy blogger.
My last Robert E. Howard project appeared more than six years ago. I have started several projects, but life has been slowing me down a bit lately and I have drifted to other interests. I have a new periodical coming out soon, called ILLUSTRATING ROBERT E. HOWARD. The first issue will be available in black and white and color editions. There are two issues planned.
I am also doing the tedious production chores for TARZAN THE GERMAN EATER, which I hope to have out by Christmas, from Old Tiger Press.

For the first time in the film history of Conan, an actor has come along who actually studied Robert E. Howard’s Conan for guidance, and that comes across in one of the most exuberant portrayals of a fictional character that we have seen in quite some time. Jason Momoa has nailed Conan, with a performance that is energetic, enthusiastic, and inspired.

No, the story is not taken directly from the pages of Robert E. Howard, though there are subtle spoken and visual references to Conan’s literary history.
After watching this film, it is apparent that the producers set out with at least three goals:

1. Reintroduce the character to a new generation of film goers.
2. Get it right this time!
3. Make an exciting and entertaining action film that would make the audiences crave more!

They have succeeded splendidly on all points, and then some. The most important thing about this film is that they chose the right man to get the job done. Momoa is a demanding, charismatic presence, and you would almost believe he was born to play Conan. His physical performance in the movie is flawless. His sword work is precise and deadly, his speed and co-ordination are not lumbering and slow like his predecessors, and for the first time in the history of the character, Conan is portrayed by someone that can actually act!

The plot is minimalistic, but sufficient for a film that was designed to tell a non-stop action packed adventure. In fact, the film moves along at such an accelerated pace that many people in the audience couldn’t believe 102 minutes had gone by when the credits started to roll.

In addition to Momoa, the rest the cast all deliver the goods. Ron Perlman is always a joy to watch. Rose McGowen still made me want to drool in spite of the hideous makeup. Rachel Nichols, as Conan’s love interest, is a natural beauty who can also fight like a Cimmerian wildcat. Stephen Lang again proves that he is one of the best bad guys in Hollywood.

The film opens up with a voice over by Morgan Freeman. It never hurts to start a film with such a class act.

I’m not going to reveal any details of the story, or the very rare and minor budget limitations that aren’t really that apparent (or important). The film succeeds to entertain if the viewer wants to be entertained. If you go to the movie wanting to dislike it, why are you wasting your time?

I’d have to give Conan the Barbarian both my thumbs up.

There are bound to be comparisons to other Howard based films, and that is sad. The original Conan movie, of which this is not a remake, was so far off base on every level that it was laughable. It has even been parodied (Master Pancake Theater’s Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Musical) and with good reason. John Milius had some sort of ridiculous vision of what Conan should be, and he tried to throw in everything but the kitchen sink. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan is a lumbering dumb ass, whose swordplay is slow and posing. While he’s showing off, swinging that big ole eighty pound sword around in circles, any real swordsman could kill him five times. And the acting? What acting? The follow-ups to the 1982 film, Conan the Destroyer and the almost Conan, Red Sonja, are in a class of pure garbage all by themselves. The 1982 film inspired dozens of imitations. Many of those were light years better than Destroyer or Sonja.
The film is also, for silly reasons, being compared to Solomon Kane. Why? Director Bassett stated that he wanted to introduce the character in his own way, then if the public bought it, he’d toss in some actual Robert E. Howard the next time around. The producers of the new Conan made basically the same statement, but what they did that Michael Bassett apparently couldn’t do was to give us a decent film. Solomon Kane plods along, like a bus making too many stops to get to a destination, and every single little detail must be explained in excruciating detail. No wonder no distributor in the United States was interested in the film. It is a bore. Cut 30 minutes out of its overlong running time, and it might have sold over here. James Purefoy comes across well as Solomon Kane, he just wasn’t given great material to work with.

Those who are actually silly enough to worry about the new Conan picture probably shouldn’t go to it. Expect a fun two hour romp, and you’ll love this picture. The action is fast, the women are beautiful, and the violence and gore are top notch. If you love blood and guts film, you’ll love Conan the Barbarian 3D. It is pure ear and eye candy for the demented, and a joy ride to everyone else.

I saw this film at a special advance screening at The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. Jason Momoa was in attendance. I will cover that event in a separate post.
Old Tiger Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02213166162878592191noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102271994326405897.post-79766954314478096062010-12-14T19:31:00.000-08:002010-12-14T19:31:28.385-08:00A GENT FROM BEAR CREEKA GENT FROM BEAR CREEK IS NOW AVAILABLE IN A TRADE PAPERBACK. Wartime Canadian pulps are extremely rare. This was the final issue of Uncanny Tales. This copy was scanned from the Richardson collection.
Here are the two covers for the July-August 1934 issue of Marvel Tales. These are ancient scans, from the Darrell Richardson collection. These were probably included in the recent auction of a small part of the Richardson collection.
I forgot about it, and a few days ago, while looking for something on my shelves, I realized why it looked so familiar to me. Four years earlier, I'd used the same piece of art and the same font on a book I did and quickly forgot. I printed half a dozen copies of it and handed them out for Howard Days in Cross Plains during that amazing gathering in 2006. In the fall of that year, I discovered that I'd accidentally had it up for sale for a couple of months on lulu.com, and it had sold about a dozen copies. I suppose it is certainly going to be a collectible, but it is certainly not a good reference book. The title was The Fiction of Robert E. Howard: A Quick Reference Guide. It was an update of the bibliography that had been published in The Howard Review # 13, and like its predecessor, it was in serious need of a proper proofing.
The font type was Auriol, and I came across it while researching projects on the legendary artist J. Allen St. John. It was the creation of the artist Georges Auriol and made its first appearance in 1901. It was highly influential on St. John's now famous lettering style, so familiar on a number of books published in the early quarter of the twentieth century by the Chicago based publisher A. C. McClurg. McClurg even paid St. John to do his lettering on cover paintings by other artists.
His most recognizable work is the logo used by Weird Tales magazine from the Howard era up until just a couple of years ago. Fans of the original Weird Tales were no doubt overjoyed when the current watered down lame version of the magazine finally stopped using the classic logo.

I have used the font myself on several St. John and Robert E. Howard projects.

I love Roy G. Krenkel's art. The source for my full color cover art was a limited edition art print done in conjunction with the publication of The Road to Azrael. The REHupa cover appears to be from the 3 color endpaper for the book. As a very serious Krenkel fan, I think that cropping a great piece of art like this is much akin to doing a pan and scan version of a cinemascope movie. The original artist's vision is completely mutilated. Fortunately, few will see this, unless you count the copy that one particular REHupan will no doubt have up for sale on eBay before the toner is even dry.
Old Tiger Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02213166162878592191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102271994326405897.post-18481043143780407992010-01-03T18:38:00.000-08:002010-01-03T19:15:36.709-08:00The Illustrators of ROBERT E. Rankin did his first illustration of a Robert E. Howard story in the March 1928 issue. The story was "The Hyena." At one point, Howard stated that Rankin was his personal favorite of all the artists that illustrated his work in Weird Tales.
He also signed some of his work with the name Doak.

Those illustrations were done in a style different from his familiar one. Unfortunately, a lot of the work Rankin did for Weird Tales was so poorly reproduced that his abilities were not always apparent.
Rankin continued to work for Weird Tales until the mid-thirties.

Rankin's second Howard illustration was for "Red Shadows," the first Solomon Kane story, in the August 1920 issue. This was followed by his illustration for the Howard poem, "The Harp of Alfred," which was featured in the September 1928 issue.

Rankin's other Howard illustrations were for:

"Skulls in the Stars" January 1929

"The Shadow Kingdom" August 1929

"Skull-Face" Part One October 1929

"The Hills of the Dead" August 1930

"Kings of the Night" November 1930

"Rogues in the House" January 1934

"The Valley of the Worm"
February 1934

"Shadows in the Moonlight"
April 1934

"Queen of the Black Coast"
May 1934

"The Devil In Iron"
August 1934

"The People of the Black Circle"
Part One September 1934

"The People of the Black Circle"
Part Two October 1934

"The People of the Black Circle"
Part Three November 1934

"A Witch Shall Be Born"
December 1934

"Beyond the Black River" Part One
May 1935

"Beyond the Black River" Part Two
June 1935

As "Doak"

"Rattle of Bones" June 1929

"The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune"
September 1929

"Skull-Face" Part Two
November 1929

"Skull-Face" Part Three
December 1929

"The Moon of Skulls" Part One
June 1930

"The Moon of Skulls" Part Two
July 1930Old Tiger Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02213166162878592191noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102271994326405897.post-88130338475497472112009-12-13T12:54:00.000-08:002009-12-13T14:52:01.195-08:00
The Illustrators of

ROBERT E. He only illustrated one Howard story, "The Lost Tribe," which appeared in the January 1927 issue.

"The Lost Tribe" was Howard's fourth story to be published by the magazine, and marked the first appearance of Bran Mak Morn.

I couldn't find out much about Olnick. He did almost all of the interior illustrations for the magazine from the August 1926 issue through the April 1927 issue. In that issue, Weird Tales used Olnick for the last time. Curtis C. M. Stevenson, a forgotten artist who failed to make a mark in the weird genre.

Howard had to rewrite “Wolfshead.”

In January of 1926, he got a desperate letter from Wright:

“...I hope you have a carbon copy of "Wolfshead." If so, will you please forward it to me at once by special delivery?

“The reason for this request is this: — Every bit of copy for the April issue is set except The Eyrie (which I hold off until the last minute) and "Wolfshead"; and so far the artist has not sent me the manuscript of "Wolfshead." He sent me the black and white art heading last week, and today I wired him to rush the manuscript to me, as the cover (I enclose an engraver’s proof) is on the press and I cannot possibly substitute another story for it now. I do not know that he has lost it, but it should have been in my hands last week, and I haven’t got the ms. to give to the printer. If it should turn out to be lost, and you haven’t a carbon copy, then Lord help us! The artist (E. M. Stevenson, of New York) has done so good a job on the "Wolfshead" cover that I have commissioned him to do the June and July covers for us.

If you receive a sudden wire from me, you will know that I have heard from the artist and that he has mislaid or lost the ms. (something that has never occurred on W. T. so far); but to hasten matters, I will be grateful if you will rush the carbon copy to me any Way, at once. Will you do this?”

Howard didn’t have a carbon for the story. He had to rewrite the story from memory. The original turned up a few days later. Howard got an extra ten dollars for doing the rewrite, and Wright also informed him that he was doubling his word rate.

Stevenson only did four other covers for Weird Tales, and he was gone, as the magazine started to develop a visual identity and found artists who were both more talented and more suited to the needs of the magazine.Old Tiger Presshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02213166162878592191noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9102271994326405897.post-2461453529273332142009-11-15T21:41:00.000-08:002009-11-15T21:52:13.316-08:00Texas Fans of Robert E.
